DAY 023 – DESIGNING DANGEROUSLY
Agree
We need to give others an opportunity to agree with us. If we are cowed and quiet, we cheat the process, like removing a key component from a recipe. The chemistry won’t be correct without our contribution.
In the times I haven’t spoken up, it’s been because I’ve made the process about me, about my comfort. I’ve hid myself away for fear of rejection or a difficult discussion. Truth has a way of pushing up through the cracks, like a plant that fractures paved concrete to get to the sun. I’d like to believe that truth is inevitable, but a candid look at experience tells me that it isn’t, at least not until we look on the most macro scale possible. Sometimes someone bolder and with common sense may speak to the point we need to share, but not always.
Our opinions, our vulnerability in the creative process is generosity. We offer our history, the way we’ve been shaped, to our collaborators and to the story we’re trying to bring forward. To remain quiet is selfishness and ultimately unjustified fear. It’s a fear and selfishness I’ve succumbed to plenty, but I’m trying to learn.
