Matthew Tibbs is a sound designer working in live performance, film, and advertising. He is Faculty at Ball State University teaching sound design and lives with Beth (wife) and Lucas (progeny) in Muncie, Indiana. A native of Oregon, Matthew has most recently lived in Salt Lake City and Portland.
Matthew lives for combining music with motion, for smashing together different areas of study including performance art, history, architecture, poetry, and literature. Matthew loves playing soccer, working with his hands, creaky analog technologies, watching film, and talking shop with other artists, creatives, and craftspeople.
Matthew’s work has been seen at film festivals nationally and internationally. Advertising has been seen on the West Coast in local and regional television markets. Matthew’s theatre work has been seen on stages in Cincinnati, Minnesota, Portland and Salem OR, and Salt Lake City.
Matthew regularly designs during the month of June for Great River Shakespeare Festival. Prior to the BSU position, Matthew spent three years as Resident Sound Designer for Pioneer Theatre Company and Adjunct Faculty at University of Utah. Matthew has taught as visiting faculty at Pacific University in Forest Grove, OR and as a graduate assistant at UC’s College-Conservatory of Music.
He holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) in Theatrical Sound Design and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Arts from George Fox University.
